"Health & Fitness can be such a roller coaster. One day riding high all the way to the top, the next day in free fall."

Sadly that free fall usually occurs around the 3rd week of January and causes so much misery as once again valiant efforts fall by the wayside.

One of the best ways to achieve your goals in any chosen field is to get a Coach. Business coaching is now commonplace, all successful sportsmen and women have coaches, everywhere we look there are coaches. Even coaches themselves have coaches.

So why still the stigma around Personal Training? For many people, the hiring of a trainer or "Health/Fitness Coach" is that little step too far, an admission that you have failed or don't know how to do things yourself.

On the contrary, hiring the correct coach for you is a committed show of strength and willingness to succeed. A great coach will ensure that you achieve your goals sooner, safer and with a plan to keep you in great shape. Rather than admitting it as a failure, it is much wiser to think of a trainer as a long term investment in your physical, emotional & spiritual well being that goes way beyond a few push ups and a park run.

Think of the benefits not only to yourself, but also to your family from having a fitter, healthier and happier version of you!

So, do YOU need a trainer? Read on and answer honestly!

1) You aren't getting the results you want.

The main reason anyone hires a trainer is because they simply aren't getting the results that they want. For many people they truly believe that they know what to do. Often people may be so attached to their method of doing things that they are not stopping to open their eyes and see a better, more proven way of getting there.

A great coach can analyse where you are going wrong and create a working plan of how to get you moving in the right direction.

2) You intellectually know what to do, but you don't do it.

For me, this point is HUGE. When you "know" what to do, but for whatever reason you struggle with it's implementation, it's definitely time to look outside of your sphere and consider hiring a trainer. What you need is someone to help you to translate health & fitness principles in to specific steps that you can slot in to your own life.

3) You feel overwhelmed.

Human beings have never in our long history ever before lived in conditions that are so far removed from natures design as we do today. With so much stress, too few hours in the day...feeling overwhelm can simply grind you to a halt. We totally get it.

A great trainer can take time to look at your schedule, suggest daily activities to move you towards your goals whilst identifying red flags that are stagnating your progress.

4) You find yourself listening only to your own ideas.

Often experienced everyday athletes tend to ignore advice from those around them, instead listening only to their own thoughts and beliefs. This is the reason why so many people follow the same stagnant, non result producing gym workout routine for many years.

A great coach blends years of experience, science and proven tried and tested methods to the table. Like any great project, it requires planning - your health is your greatest project, it is quite literally your life's work.

5) You try new things but they never work.

Every year new diets or exercise fads hit the market promising to be the Holy Grail. You try them with mediocre to little success which just breeds more disillusionment towards exercise.

Really great trainers will be able to identify your body type, your eating type, your current status and exercise level plus much more, then offering valid reasons as to why specific exercise protocols are or aren't correct for you. The "Personal" in Personal Training is what's going to work for you, not someone else.

6) You see no way forwards.

A great coach will help you to become "Unstuck" helping you to move forwards more quickly towards your goals.

Think of a great trainer as a GPS. You plug in to your GPS (trainer) and enter a destination (health & fitness goal). The trainer then identifies a route consisting of many steps to get you yo your destination.

Like with any journey, you may stumble upon roadblocks, however the trainer's job is to plan an alternative route which may take longer but still get's you to your destination.

Your job is to follow the route!

7) You lack motivation.

You may lack motivation to exercise, eat correctly, you may stick with the same routine for many years. For many, motivation is a key reason to hire a trainer.

If you stick with the same routine for a long time, at some point you will reach a plateau. Worse still you could get bored and give up.

A trainer guides you, challenges you, getting you to achieve things you never thought were possible.

What to look for in a trainer!

When looking for a trainer look for evidence of success. If you are looking for weight loss/body transformation, can they provide photo's and testimonials of clients who have achieved? Similarly for any goal, have they got any proof to back up their claims? If not my advice is to walk away.

A trainer should also be qualified to UK level 3 as an absolute minimum. Be warned though, a level 3 trainer can become qualified in as little as 6 weeks part time. I ask you this...would you take your car to a garage where you knew the mechanic qualified on a 6 week part time course? Your body is way more valuable than your car.

Ideally look for a level 4 trainer with university post graduate level qualifications. This shows time, effort and commitment to learning, not to mention a huge financial investment in learning how to do things the correct way. Look for the trainers commitment to ongoing learning as well...exercise science evolves quickly, so must today's trainer. In my opinion the platinum standard trainers in the industry are trained by the CHEK Institute.

If it's too good to be true...it probably is. Personal Training by fully qualified, fully insured, experienced trainers in Surrey for £20 per session...that could very easily be a false economy. If you want a Mercedes Benz equivalent trainer that ticks every box, be prepared to pay the premium.
